my first event - 5/2/26

'coming to...'

on thursday 5th feb i’ll be throwing my first ever event. eee! this is something i’ve wanted to do for a long time, rooted in my interest in how visual art and sound can exist together and create one cohesive experience. maybe even a whole new environment - one that encourages expression and realisations. moments of ‘coming to…’, if you will.

not quite here, not quite there.

although i can now sit somewhere in the category of being a ‘creative person’, it hasn’t always felt that way. while i’ve always been into fashion or interior design (honestly, what other 11-year-old goes to their secondary school interview and says they want to do interior design lol), i can’t draw, i can’t paint, and I was never good at non-fiction writing - all the stereotypical forms of “art” when you’re younger. so even though the interest was always there, those kinds of creativity never felt accessible to me. i sat in this awkward middle ground of being neither the “smart one” nor the “artsy one.”

tuning in.

as i got older, i found myself feeling uncomfortable in spaces where it felt like everyone around me was so creative - galleries, exhibitions, social media, even within my own social circles. i leaned into academia, thinking that was my calling - good old gender studies masters shout out. then came djing. this was one of the first things that made me feel like i had something to offer in those spaces. a creative outlet, a form of expression where I could tell a story, in my own way. the more i have immersed myself in that world - at festivals, raves, clubs, dozie - my belief in what a creative landscape looks like has evolved massively, slowly coming to the realisation that maybe i am more of a creative than i once thought.

when you mesh together sound and the visual, that’s where i felt i really started to lock in. so of course while djing has become something i love and pursue, i have also leaned into writing more, taking photos, or even picking up a canvas and some paints and seeing where it goes as i listen to new releases and different genres - these have all been little moments of ‘coming to’. moments where i felt encouraged rather than intimidated to explore my creativity.

it all makes sense eventually.

that’s what this event - and in some ways this whole project - is about. offering a space for people to come to these kinds of realisations or to just celebrate others who are. for those with unrealised pursuits, half-formed ideas, or quiet interests that just need a bit of space and the right environment to exist. outside of pressure and perfection. where creativity can be explored and celebrated without it having to become your whole identity.

i hope that gives a bit of background on what this event is. maybe it still sounds a bit messy on paper, but it’ll make sense once you’re there - once you see the community and environment being built through this project, and through my own creative journey since moving to australia. i am so fortunate to be surrounded by so many creatives who just want to express themselves without it having to define them, but something they’re slowly coming to fruition with.

so if you’re intrigued and want to see how it all pans out, please pop in. it’s free, it’s fun, and hopefully it inspires you - without constraints or pressure. there will be a range of DJs, photographers, designers, writers and more, all ‘coming to…’

i can’t wait to see you there!
